I have been to Hawaii several times, but I must confess I have never been to the island of Kauai. Oahu many times, and the big island a couple of times. Now that I’ve published this story, I want desperately to go to Kauai. Back in the day (or as my kids say, before the wheel) our trips to Sydney, Australia, had to stop in both Hawaii and Fiji for refueling. I’m talking back around 1973, and we had to declare customs in Hawaii in the middle of the night. I hated those flights, and counting ground time it took almost 24 hours from Sydney to San Francisco, which was my second stop back then.
In fact, 1973 was the year I first arrived in the U.S. and of course Hawaii was my first state. I had two Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations that year. I attended an afternoon party in Sydney, then I got on the plane, and celebrated again in Honolulu the next day with a St. Patty’s Day parade. I’d often break the flight and spend a few days on the beach. Fun times. Now you hop onto a much faster jet in Los Angeles and fly straight through, and all in less than 14 hours. Still a long flight but so, so much easier.
Have you been to Hawaii? Which Island? Did you love it and hunger to return, or is island life not for you? Never visited the islands? Is it on your bucket list?
